A traditional mushroom hunt, Spain

Mushrooms take a central role in much of the diet here in Catalunya.  You can find them in a variety of dishes alongside other traditional Mediterranean cuisine like fresh olives, produce, fish, and cheese.  It just so happens to be the mushroom season in mid-November, and some of our friends from Barcelona invited us to go mushroom hunting with them in the “campo” or the countryside, about 2 hours outside of Barcelona.  Our “hunting” party of 8 ventured out into the woods to find more species of mushrooms than I ever knew existed.  Of course only about a quarter of the ones we found were actually edible, but they do make for a pretty incredible photo subjects!
