Cannon Beach Oregon // Lifelong Friends

Have you ever met someone and knew in an instant that you would be lifelong friends?  I’ve only had that feeling a handful of times in my life, but it’s so refreshing when you just have that simple connection with someone.  It’s even more unique when you find that in another couple, where you both get along with each person in the other pair and love spending time together!
That’s how we felt about Devin and Rachel, from the moment we meet them during our first few weeks in Barcelona two years ago, we knew we would be instant friends! We were both from the United States living as expats in Barcelona and we share a mutual love for travel, coffee, deep conversations, good food, and authentic experiences.
We traveled a number of times throughout Europe, hiked many miles, and now two years later find ourselves living in the North-West United States. Devin and Rachel have relocated to Portland, Oregon, and Chris and I to Lakeside, Montana. A few weeks ago, we made the 9-hour drive from Lakeside to Portland to see our dear friends and camped on the Oregon coast at Cannon Beach.  We loved our little campground, which was just a few blocks walk from the beach and a number of great restaurants and coffee shops.
It had been a few months since we had seen each other, so we spent most of our time in good conversation by the warmth of our beach fire, walking on the water’s edge at sunset, and hiking along the beautiful coastal trails eating our fill of wild blackberries that were scattered along the trail.Life takes us on a journey, often to places far away from our lifelong friends.  It takes effort and energy on both sides to stay in touch, but the beauty of lifelong friends is that it’s always the same when we come back together.

  1. That is a wonderful experience you so well express, and yes, to answer your question, I have been fortunate in the same way. Curiously distance helps, while close proximity living as neighbours sharing regular social life can cause pitfalls. It is then that humility plays an importnat part towards reconciliation. Faith, trust, confidence in God, the assurance of Christ's presence, bring healing to what sometimes may seem impossible situations even amongst the best of friends. What the world needs, right?
